Data Notes: Nazi Data Transferred to the US

47 million Nazi-era files are being transferred to the US, Israel, and other places, with an eye toward full and complete public access later this year. The efficiency of Nazi data collection has long been acknowledged (see Guy Adams’ and Danny Lee Balfour’s Unmasking Administrative Evil), but some of the data that will be included in the electronic transfer are beyond belief.

These events remind me of how we little we know about why and when governments collect data.
